My Perspective

In the past four years the Town of Firestone has made significant progress in many areas, even when we were confronted with the COVID-19 Pandemic. While many communities struggled with the effect of the pandemic, Firestone was not nearly affected. Because of this event the town staff and Board of Trustees learned from the challenges and have created a solid foundation to move Firestone forward in years to come.

As Firestone continues to grow, there is still much work that needs to be done to bring more businesses and amenities to our town. It has been a true honor and pleasure for me to have been elected to represent you for the last four years. I hope my work from the past years show that you can trust me for another term as Trustee.


 In addition to serving our community as a trustee, I have been appointed to other key roles such as a liaison to the Fredrick Firestone Fire Protection District, the Carbon Valley Recreational District, and appointed as Chair of the Firestone Urban Renewal Authority. I would like to continue to serve you for the next four years which is why I am announcing that I am seeking re-election. I humbly ask you to consider voting for me in the upcoming Firestone Board of Trustees Election this April 5th.

My Thoughts on What a Trustee Should be...

According to both the United States and the State of Colorado’s Constitutions, they were established to establish Justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

I love both of those documents as they delineate who has the legislative power, who has executive power, and who has the judicial power in our government. However, I especially love them for how they delineate what the government CAN’T do.

In my opinion, government needs to be big enough to provide for things that ALL citizens need along with the aforementioned items.

Government needs to be at a size that provides the services needed to the citizens for what it is designed for and no bigger. Other than that, government should stay out of the way of the citizenry and let them choose how to go about their lives.

In Firestone, when I was first elected 4 years ago, the town government was woefully understaffed. It did not have the infrastructure in place to do what was needed, and was sorely needing leadership in the form of a Town Manager.

The saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know”, applied to this situation. It applies to me as well as anybody else. A person doesn’t know what they don’t know, until they are made aware of that which someone does know. There are two reasons why this can be said. I have spent 22 years of my career in the employ of a large municipal government, and I know what the organization should be and how it should run. Hiring a professional, experienced Town Manager who has the capability to transform the organization was key.

Up to that point, the town had gone through several town managers, the retention rate of staff members was very low, and the organizational structure, although good on paper, was chaotic and unorganized. Work was being farmed out to private contractors at exorbitant rates and capital equipment was being leased with contracts costing the town hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest payments.

I believe a Trustee should be a person who understands what the proper balance should be in relation to the size of the Town’s government versus the Town’s population. At the time I took office in 2018, the Town’s organization had very few “Director Level” positions. These positions were contracted out, creating a very disjointed organization. This type of organization may have worked when the town had a population of 5,000 people. I can tell you, it doesn’t work in a town with a population of 18,000 people. We now have an organization that fits the population size and an extremely capable Town Manager.

A Trustee should also be a person who is able to have a vision of what the town will look and be like in 5, 10 and 20 years out, as a lot of policy decisions will affect the town in those time frames. Some will affect the town 30 plus years. One example of that is the new water plant that will be completed in April.


A Trustee needs to be a good steward of the resident’s tax dollars. They must be mindful of how and where the money is being spent and to not overspend. In cases where debt needs to be taken on, the Trustee must be able to justify why it was taken on and show what revenue streams will pay the debt off. Preferably and when possible, taxes SHOULD NOT be raised only unless there is no other option available. I personally do not like debt. But there are instances where there is a thing called “Good Debt”. Infrastructure that will be used for decades falls into that category.


Finally, a Trustee needs to listen to the residents. A Trustee is the residents representative. I am more than willing to engage in conversation with any of the residents of Firestone. That is the only way to truly know what direction the town needs to go.

My husband and I are pleased to endorse Don Conyac for Firestone Board Trustee. During Don's current four-year term as Trustee, we worked directly with him on multiple projects impacting the Neighbors Point subdivision. He was always informed, responsive, communicated and was willing to attend homeowner association meetings to discuss issues directly with homeowners.

Don Cares about Firestone and its' future growth and development. He is a proponent of long-term planning for commercial and residential development. Some firestone Projects Don supports are the development of central park; a much needed addition to the town, the development of the new water treatment plant which will help ensure water for Firestone in the future, and the development of the new park in the Neighbor's Point subdivision which was intentionally designed to minimize water usage.

A Trustee should understand their fiduciary responsibility to the voters and to the community. Don Has always demonstrated he is qualified, understands his fiduciary role, supports the Firestone community and is willing to work with the residents of Firestone.
